Tariffs 101: Why This Trade War Ain’t Giving What Y’all Think It’s Giving

June 1, 20253 min read

Let’s talk about tariffs. Yep, we’re getting political today, because your groceries are sky-high, your electronics cost more than your rent, and you’re out here wondering why a $12 cucumber salad just cost $27.

The answer? Tariffs.

What Even Is a Tariff?

A tariff is basically a tax on imported goods. When the U.S. slaps a tariff on, say, electronics from China or makeup components from Korea, that cost doesn’t just disappear. Nah, companies just pass it right on down to you, the consumer. That’s right, tariffs are taxes you pay without even knowing it.

Politicians love to frame them as “tough on trade” or “protecting American jobs,” but BFFR: it’s poor people footing the bill while billionaires laugh from their tax-free yachts.

This Trade War? BS.

We’re in the middle of a full-on tariff war right now. The government’s throwing taxes on everything from EV batteries to wigs (yes, wigs), and who’s suffering most? Working class Black and brown folks who already don’t get livable wages, healthcare, or affordable housing.

Meanwhile, the ultra-wealthy are out here dodging taxes like it’s a sport, getting subsidies, and using loopholes we’ll never even see. And still, some of y’all defend them like you’re a paycheck away from buying a G-Wagon and investing in Dubai real estate. Be serious.

Capitalism’s Favorite Lie: “You’re Still in the Running to be America’s next Billionaire.”

This American delusion that you could be rich one day so you better protect the rich now? It’s tired. Most of us are one medical emergency or job layoff away from selling feet pics for Wi-Fi money. And guess what, tariffs make that struggle even worse. Higher costs mean small businesses suffer, rent stays unaffordable, and everything from hair grease to baby formula gets taxed to hell.

So When Are We Gonna Be Like the French?

Say what you want about the French, but when their government acts up? They act right back. We’re over here getting hit with inflation, 9-to-5 disrespect, and surging prices all in the name of “protecting American interests”—and barely making noise. Meanwhile, France be on their third protest of the week over pension hikes. Americans? We write tweets and…that’s it.

TL;DR:

  • Tariffs = taxes on imports that raise prices for you
  • Billionaires don’t feel it. You do.
  • The trade war isn’t saving your job, it’s draining your bank account
  • Stop defending people who would step over you in a natural disaster line
  • Maybe it’s time we stepped our protest game all the way up
