A Staycation is the New Vacation in 2020
To be frank, ever since Breonna Taylor died, Niggaz got me all the way fucked up. Even more so than usual. Between Breonna Taylor’s murders still on the loose, Talib Kweli harassing Black women on any social media platform he can get his old ass on, pandemic anxiety, the shitty political climate, performative activism, an intrusive work from home environment, and demanding clients, my sister, The Body Brat, and I needed a vacation from the bull shit. But, because we’re Black and responsible “influencers” we decided to embark on a cute little 5-night staycation at a Hyatt hotel 30 minutes from our home in the Bronx.
We strategically choose the Hyatt Hotel in Yonkers because it’s close to our home in the Bronx, the hotel had good social distancing precautions, and its located in the middle of an outdoor mall with a bunch of restaurants and a grocery store, so we had plenty of food options.
If you don’t know what you don’t know a staycation is a vacation filled with vacation-like activities within a short distance of your home. During our BAP staycation, Ari and I got a chance to unplug and indulge in endless self-care rituals, some light shopping, enjoyed exclusive hotel pool time, good take out, and caught up on some much-needed sleep.
I think the best part of the entire staycation was the Hotel pool. At check-in, we got the opportunity to make several private reservations for the pool. Because we’re still in a pandemic and have to social distance the hotel allotted one hour of pool time per party per day, so we had a safe space to swim all to ourselves.
As Black women, I think it is very important to make ourselves more of a priority. Far too often I see Black woman busting their asses to provide the proper support for their friends, family, and colleagues. And although being a strong Black woman is cool, we still deserve a break from playing captain save a hoe in our daily lives. Sometimes you need a change of scenery, a place to unplug and, a place to stay zen.
